Watercolor Paper – Part I


A guide on how to select paper for watercolor painting

Watercolor paper is one of the important factors for a good painting, so it is important to know the different types of paper, its characteristics and use.

The first division is between student paper and artist or professional paper.

Student paper is wood pulp based and it is primarily used for beginners and for quick sketches. This kind of paper makes it more difficult to work wet on wet, and additionaly it tends to turn yellow over time.

Artist paper on the other hand, is 100% cotton based and acid-free.

There are several characteristics to have in mind, such as paper surface, weight, size and presentation such as blocks or sheet / rolls, and brand of paper.
